Boston Society of Architects, Director's Citation for Collaborative Design - 2006
Clubhouse for the
Cape Fear Yacht Club, Oak Island, NC. This project received this special
award from the director of the BSA in recognition of the power of design to
engage us all in building communities collaboratively. Rich Bandera is a member of the yacht club. As such, it was important to him that the membership be actively engaged in the design and construction of the building. Given the budget and the bids received from contractors, the membership could have easily scrapped the design and gone for a pre-fabricated box. Instead they opted to pick up hammers and paint brushes and provide the finish details such as interior painting and tile work, arbors, and landscaping. This citation honors their belief that good design matters.
